This acclaimed touring recital traces spirituality in music from American gospel and soul through to its roots in African folk tradition. The programme features Steven Banks's Come As You Are, gospel and Sam Cooke songs, spirituals by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, New Orleans jazz, and Beddard's own Suite after Abel Selaocoe, a finale drawing on Selaocoe's distinctive fusion of African traditional music and Western classical forms. Samuel Beddard is a Guildhall-trained saxophonist specialising in classical, folk and jazz fusions; Jo Foote studied music at the University of Manchester, specialising in piano performance and accompaniment.

Tuning

Keyboard instruments at Hammerwood are classically tuned, to permit a greater degree of musical expression. For more information, click here to listen to a recording of Ralitska Penkova performing two of Chopin's Nocturnes and his Piano Sonata No. 2, at Hammerwood in August 2016, on an 1802 fortepiano tuned in a variation of Werkmeister III temperament.    Click here and here for YouTube videos of more general explanations of the effect of unequal temperament on mood and emotion in music.
